Sumatra Island

Currently, Indonesia consists of 34 provinces, five of which have special status or  special region such as Aceh, Jakarta, Papua, West Papua and Yogyakarta. 10 of them are on the island of Sumatra, Java 6, 5 are on the island of Borneo, Sulawesi island 6, 3 are in Nusa Tenggara islands, 2 in the Maluku islands and another 2 are in Papua.
       
Indonesia is divided into 3 time regions, namely a Western Indonesia Time (WIB), the Central Indonesian Time (WITA) and Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT).Western Indonesia Time region covers the whole of Sumatra, Java, West Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan. Central Indonesia Time region covers  area of ​​Central Sulawesi, South Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara. The Eastern Indonesia Region Time covers Maluku, North Maluku and Papua.


SUMATRA ISLAND

Sumatra is one of the largest islands in Indonesia, and is ranked 6th in the world. Extent of approximately 443 km2, with a population of over 42 million people.
From time to time the island of Sumatra has various names designations. In ancient times, the island was known as Swarnadwipa which means island of gold  and also called as Andalas island which has the same meaning. So named because the island is rich in minerals and various spices. Traders were very interested because of the huge profits.
From the book Negarakertagama, written by Mpu Prapanca, which is relics of ancient Javanese kingdom Majapahit in the 14th century, called the island of Sumatra as the land of Malay.
Sumatra name itself comes from the name of the first Islamic kingdom in the archipelago, located now in the region of Aceh, named  Samudra Pasai . The kingdom was established around the 13th century, developed into a center of trade, shipping and the spread of Islam. In its golden age, Samudra Pasai  frequently visited by foreign traders such as Marco Polo from Italy or travelers who want to deepen Islam. One of them was Ibn Battuta from Morocco.From the note of Ibn Battuta, there was a society known  as Samudra Pasai . Although the monarchy Samudra Pasai finally disappeared by the triumph of Malacca sultanate, but the name of Samudra Pasai eternal in another form. In his writings, Ibn Battuta spell the name as "Sunatrah". And that's the forerunner of Sumatra island known name now.


The Bukit Barisan mountains contain several active volcanoes . Some of the top mountain chain exceeding 3000 meters above sea level in line along the west side of the island from the north end to the south. And Mount Kerinci 3805 masl is the highest mountain on the island of Sumatra.

Sumatra is divided into 10 administrative regions, namely Special Region Nangroe Aceh Darussalam , North Sumatra Province ,West Sumatra Province, Jambi Province, Bengkulu Province, Riau Province, Riau Islands Province, South Sumatra Province and Lampung Province
