Rujak

In hot weather certainly delicious to eat raw fresh fruit. But it is also delicious when made rujak.  Rujak is fruit salad with pungent dressing. Because Indonesian people like to eat fruit salad, so if you travel to Indonesia, it will be very easy to find rujak vendor everywhere. Even in the supermarket usually have rujak already packed

It called rujak manis because the dressing is made from brown sugar, sour, salt, and for those who like spicy it can be added with chilis. Fruits for rujak are cucumber, juicy tuber, young mango, pineapple, papaya and guava. But it can also be made from other fruits depending on taste. To make this fruits salad is usually selected fruits that contain lots of water.

You can find a rujak in almost all of Indonesia. Generally the sauce are basically the same, but in a sense there may be differences due to the herbs plus with other items that are characteristic of the area. For example, on the island of Madura,rujak manis (rujak=fruit salad,,manis=sweet)means fruit salad with brown sugar sauce mixed with nuts. In certain areas the sweet fruit salad served with fried tofu pieces or crackers.

How to sell? Sweet fruit salad sauce usually prepared, just pour over fruit pieces. There is also the so-called Rujak uleg. Rujak uleg spices will grind first and then  fruit pieces stir until mixed.

Besides salad, many fruits pieces are sold already made ​​sweets. Indeed, the fruit was not fresh anymore but still good to eat, especially when cooled. Some are made ​​of fruit, some are made ​​from vegetables (especially green mustard) that flavored with  red pepper. Sour sweet taste, but people tend to call it asinan (salted vegetables), not manisan (sweets).

Cianjur town in West Java, 120 km from Jakarta, is known as the center of sweets. Various kinds of manisan and asinan you can get it in there.
